The fact that the visit was private led people to wonder whether he might be showing an interest in buying property there or in meeting up with friends who live at the complex, though neither of these possibilities has been officially confirmed.
His arrival at the resort was met with a heavy security presence, including an eight-vehicle motorcade escorted by the National Republican Guard. His time in the Alentejo was part of a multi-day visit to Portugal that included a reception at the Tires Airfield hosted by the Cascais municipality, a private audience with the President of the Republic at the Belém Palace, and a talk on artificial intelligence, leadership, and geopolitics before an audience of approximately 12,000 people at the Game Changers Forum at the MEO Arena in Lisbon.
