A forgotten box of photography equipment stored in an Oxfordshire loft for nearly 30 years has revealed a very rare Victorian camera that sold at auction for £18,000. The collection was first put away in 1996 by a homeowner who had inherited his father's belongings.
Nearly 30 years later, during a routine house clearance, he found a late 19th-century folding camera made of mahogany and brass. It was tucked inside a leather case. According to cataloguing details and sales records released by Churchill Auctions, the historic camera attracted strong competition from international collectors before selling for a hammer price of £18,000. After the sale, the seller announced that a large part of the auction proceeds would go directly to UK wildlife conservation charities.
The donation is in memory of his late father, who loved nature and was a keen amateur photographer.
Decades of storage in a village home
The camera equipment was first stored away in 1996, when the owner moved into his family home in Oxfordshire. The wooden crate was left untouched in an insulated loft for almost 30 years, surrounded by personal belongings, old books, and household items. When the homeowner decided to clear the attic, he brought several dusty cases downstairs to check what was inside.
In one padded leather case, he found a well-preserved Victorian tailboard camera.
It had brass fittings, its original bellows, and a carefully made optical lens dating from the late 1800s. According to a background account published by Churchill Auctions, the owner's father had bought the camera decades earlier at a local estate sale. However, the family had no idea of its historical importance or market value. The loft's dry and stable conditions helped protect the camera over the years.
They prevented fungus from damaging the glass lenses and helped keep the polished mahogany woodwork from bending or changing shape.
Expert evaluation and historical significance
Realising that the camera was an unusually fine example of early British photography equipment, the owner took it to Churchill Auctions for a professional valuation and assessment. Auctioneers and photography specialists at Churchill Auctions identified it as an outstanding late Victorian wet-plate or dry-plate camera.
It was made during the period when British manufacturers were known for producing cameras from brass and mahogany.
Specialists noted that many surviving cameras from the 1880s and 1890s show heavy wear, have missing parts, or have damaged leather bellows. In contrast, the camera found in the Oxfordshire loft was in almost museum-quality condition, with all its original brass fittings still in place. According to valuation notes from Churchill Auctions, well-preserved 19th-century cameras made by famous London manufacturers are becoming increasingly popular with private collectors, photography historians, and museum curators around the world.
Auction room competition and sale results
The Victorian camera was listed as a major item in a recent fine art and antiques auction held by Churchill Auctions. Interest before the sale grew quickly as international buyers signed up to bid by phone and online. On auction day, strong competition pushed the price well above the initial estimates. The bidding eventually ended at £18,000. Auctioneers at Churchill Auctions confirmed that the winning bid came from a private collector who specialises in 19th-century scientific instruments and early optical equipment.
The unexpected money gave the seller a chance to honour his father's lifelong interests.
Funding wildlife conservation initiatives
After the auction ended, the seller confirmed that the proceeds from the £18,000 sale would be donated to support local and national wildlife conservation funds. According to details shared by Churchill Auctions, the seller's father was a dedicated naturalist who spent decades recording the plants and animals found in the British countryside.
By giving the money to wildlife protection groups, the family hopes to create a lasting legacy for nature linked to the long-forgotten camera.
The donations will support local projects to restore natural habitats, manage woodlands, and protect native species across the region. In this way, a forgotten piece of Victorian history will help support modern efforts to protect wildlife and the natural environment.
