The Nansana Municipality MP has urged government agencies to enforce fire safety standards in schools and hotels after a blaze at Hami Junior School killed two pupils.
Nansana Municipality Member of Parliament Zambali Bulasio Mukasa has called for urgent action to address fire outbreaks in Uganda following a blaze at Hami Junior School that claimed the lives of two pupils.
Speaking in Parliament, Mukasa cited the school fire and another outbreak at Ivory Hotel, which reportedly caused significant damage, as examples of the need to strengthen fire prevention and safety measures.
“I have drawn the attention of Parliament to the numerous fire outbreaks in our country, especially in Nansana at Hami Junior School that claimed two innocent lives and at Ivory Hotel, which reportedly caused significant destruction,” Mukasa said.
Following his submission, Parliament observed a moment of silence in honour of the two pupils who died in the Hami Junior School fire.
“Parliament has observed a moment of silence for the innocent souls lost. We cannot continue to lose our children in such preventable tragedies,” Mukasa said.
The pupils were identified as Namusoke Raniya, a Primary One pupil, and Abdul Shakur Bwette, a Primary Three pupil.
Mukasa also said the Office of the Prime Minister had pledged support for the bereaved families.
“The Office of the Prime Minister has pledged to help the bereaved families of Namusoke Raniya (P.1) and Abdul Shakur Bwette (P.3). This is a welcome move, but we need long-term solutions,” he said.
The MP called on the Ministry of Education and Sports, the ministry responsible for disaster preparedness, and the Police Fire and Rescue Services Department to urgently inspect schools and hotels to establish whether they comply with fire safety requirements.
He urged the agencies to enforce safety standards to reduce the risk of similar incidents and protect lives.
