Bitcoin has a crowd waiting for it at $87,000. According to a post on X citing Binance data, major liquidation clusters and top buyers sit around that level.
What the heatmap is showing
A liquidation heatmap shows where borrowed bets are concentrated and where they would be force-closed if price moves against them. When an exchange liquidates a position, it sells or buys automatically to cover the loss.
Binance’s BTC/USDT perpetual futures heatmap shows significant clusters of leveraged positions surrounding $87K as of October 21, 2026. At that point, Bitcoin was trading between $82,800 and $83,700.
The heatmap shows considerable liquidation pressure in the $87K to $92K range. Much of it reflects positioning built from late September to early October.
Closer to the current price, an estimated $289 million in short liquidations sits between roughly $82.8K and $86.9K on a 5% move. If Bitcoin climbs into that band, those short sellers could be forced to buy back.
The other side of the ledger
Estimates point to approximately $417 million in long liquidation exposure below the current price on a 5% drop.
More leveraged long exposure appears to sit below the price than short exposure sits above it within a 5% band.
Glassnode data adds a wider lens. Its October 7, 2026 reading recorded the largest Bitcoin liquidation cluster above the price in the $87.1K to $95.9K range. The heaviest concentration sat near $92K and had been accumulating since March.
Why $87K keeps showing up
Bitcoin reached a peak of around $87,400 in late September 2026. That run wiped out more than $648 million in short positions during the move higher.
Since then, Bitcoin has been consolidating in the low-to-mid $80,000s after a series of tests of higher levels.
The ETF piece of the puzzle
The breakeven zone for US spot Bitcoin ETFs is cited near $82K to $86K. Bitcoin is currently trading inside the lower part of that range. The research describes inflows here as potential bullish confirmation.
What this means for traders
On the bullish side, if price pushes through $87K, the short positions clustered above could add buying pressure as they are forced closed. The larger Glassnode cluster near $92K would then become the next obvious target on the map.
On the bearish side, a break below $82K could set off substantial long liquidations, meaning forced selling at exactly the moment ETF holders slip below their breakeven zone.
The things to watch are whether Bitcoin can post a daily close above $87K, whether ETF flows turn positive in the $82K to $86K zone, and whether $82K holds on any pullback.
