This year has seen the launch of the inaugural Nations Championship competition, created to restructure the global calendar and inject competitive meaning into the traditional mid-year and end-of-year Test windows.
For decades, July and November international rugby windows consisted of largely ‘disconnected’ Test matches and tours, but the Nations Championship has aimed to unite these windows into a cohesive, structured global league format.
It is set to be held biennially in even-numbered years (avoiding a clash with the Rugby World Cup and British & Irish Lions tours), pitting the Northern Hemisphere against the Southern Hemisphere in a points-accumulating league table that culminates in a grand Finals Weekend.
Organisers planning to build on first Nations Championship
In a statement released on Thursday, tournament organisers said the plan was to build a stronger, more sustainable future for the game.
“United by a shared ambition, the founding unions have created a premium global competition that delivers for fans, partners and the wider game,” the statement read.
“Leaders from the ten founding Nations Championship unions met in Sydney, Australia this week to strengthen their partnership and continue to advance an agile dynamic framework to support the tournament’s long-term success.
“Buoyed by the success of July’s Southern Hemisphere Series, the new structure will enable effective decision-making, foster innovation and deepen fan engagement, while supporting sustainable growth across the sport.
“This partnership will complement World Rugby’s role and existing competitions, ensuring continued alignment and collaboration across the international game.”
HOW IT WORKS
Group Stages (Rounds 1 to 6)
- Cross-Hemisphere Play: Teams do not play opponents within their own conference during the pool stage. Instead, every team plays six matches against each of the teams from the opposing hemisphere.
- The Windows: The tournament is split into two ‘chapters’ – three matches during the mid-year window in July, and three matches during the end-of-year window in November.
- Points System: Standard World Rugby bonus-point rules apply (four for a win, two for a draw, plus try and losing bonus points) to rank teams within their respective Northern and Southern tables.
Following the six pool rounds, all 12 teams travel to a centralised location for a Finals Weekend featuring three days of cross-hemisphere double-headers.
- Ranking Playoffs: Teams play their equivalent-ranked finisher from the opposite group (e.g., 6th vs 6th, 5th vs 5th, up to 2nd vs 2nd).
- The Championship Final: The team finishing first in the Northern group plays the team finishing first in the Southern group to crown the ultimate global champion.
- The Hemisphere Shield: Alongside individual match stakes, results on Finals Weekend contribute points toward a broader North vs South competition to decide the winning hemisphere overall.
