JAKARTA: Popular Indonesian singer Cakra Khan has slammed politicians and businesses in his home country for failing to curb the annual transboundary haze.
The seasonal pollution chokes citizens across Indonesia—especially in Sumatra and Borneo—while also affecting people in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.
The 34-year-old crooner said they were "all to blame for prioritising profits over people", expressing deep concern that Indonesia would forever be seen as the region's main polluter and an untrustworthy neighbour.
"The open burning that generates this ghastly haze annually also damages the ecosystem and threatens wildlife. Everyone stands to lose from this catastrophe. Only the corrupt and greedy are able to get away from this," Cakra said in a recent post on Threads.
Cakra urged all Indonesians to unite and demand bold action from the authorities and big corporations.
He called for a permanent end to the annual haze, noting that it damages public health and reduces productivity.
"Stop this annual calamity from happening again! I also feel sorry for our neighbours. We should stop choking them as well as ourselves now," he added, referring to an earlier Threads post where he expressed sympathy for Malaysians, Singaporeans, and Bruneians.
