U.S. President Donald Trump announced that preparations are underway to launch large-scale oil, gas, and mineral exploration in Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark that occupies a strategic position in the Arctic.
Trump made the announcement this week through his social media platform Truth Social, where he also defended the island’s importance to U.S. national security and highlighted what he described as the benefits of a recent agreement reached with Denmark and Greenlandic authorities.
Trump unveils major resource exploration push in Greenland
“Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!” Trump wrote in his post, referring to the territory as “our new and beautiful Greenland.”
His remarks have once again placed Washington’s economic and military interests in the island at the center of international debate, following months of diplomatic tensions over the U.S. president’s efforts to expand American control over the North Atlantic territory.
In his message, Trump stressed that Greenland’s geographic location provides a decisive advantage in protecting the United States against potential military threats. He claimed that any future attack on the country would have to pass through the island and touted the ability of U.S. defense systems to intercept projectiles and other weapons.
“Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our Defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived,” the president said.
Trump also highlighted the territory’s strategic advantages for surveillance and military response. “It gives us time, location, and sightline, like nowhere else in the World!” he added, arguing that Greenland offers a combination of response time, geographic positioning, and visibility that is difficult to find elsewhere.
The island lies along a strategic route between North America and Europe and sits on the shortest path that certain missiles could take between Russia and the United States. These characteristics make it a significant component of Washington’s missile defense plans, including the so-called Golden Dome system promoted by Trump.

Oil, gas, and minerals: Greenland’s economic potential
Beyond its military importance, the U.S. president focused on Greenland’s natural resources. Trump claimed, citing unidentified experts, that the region could hold extraordinary quantities of easily accessible oil. However, he did not provide specific studies or identify which companies would participate in the announced operations, when on-the-ground work would begin, or what investments would be required.
Greenland possesses significant mineral resources, including rare earth elements that are essential to industries such as electronics manufacturing, renewable energy, and certain defense technologies. Its economic potential is also linked to growing international efforts to secure supplies of strategic raw materials amid intensifying competition among major powers.
However, exploiting these resources presents significant challenges. Nearly 80% of the island’s surface is covered by ice, weather conditions are extreme, and many areas with potential mineral deposits lack the infrastructure needed to support large-scale projects.
In addition, Greenland suspended the issuance of new oil exploration licenses in 2021 on environmental and climate grounds. Trump’s announcement therefore does not mean that new drilling or mining operations have automatically been authorized.
Security agreement leaves key differences unresolved
The announcement came weeks after the United States, Denmark, and Greenland reached a security agreement that provides for an expanded U.S. military presence on the island. Plans include establishing new defense zones in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, as well as expanding existing military capabilities.
The agreement preserved Danish sovereignty over Greenland and recognized the territory’s autonomous status, without automatically granting Washington rights to exploit its natural resources. Economic activities must comply with the regulations and authorization requirements applicable on the island.
Trump’s initiative therefore raises questions about the actual scope of U.S. plans and the relationship between military cooperation and economic interests in the Arctic. While Washington portrays Greenland as an essential asset for its security and strategic resource supplies, the development of extraction projects will depend on regulatory decisions, investment, and environmental conditions that remain to be resolved.
