Commuters travelling through central Hyderabad can expect traffic restrictions and diversions around Hussain Sagar for nearly three days as the Hyderabad Traffic Police announced special arrangements for the immersion of Durga Matha idols at People’s Plaza, Garden Point and the baby ponds at Jalavihar and Sanjeevaiah Park.
The restrictions will come into effect at 3 p.m. on Wednesday (October 21, 2026) and remain in place until 6 a.m. on Saturday (October 24, 2026). However, the police clarified that diversions would be implemented depending on traffic conditions and the movement of idol processions for immersion.
According to an advisory issued by Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis, several major roads connecting Khairatabad, Secretariat, Tank Bund and Necklace Road will be regulated, with certain stretches reserved exclusively for vehicles carrying Durga idols.
Traffic diversions around Hussain Sagar
Vehicles travelling from Panjagutta and Raj Bhavan Road towards the Khairatabad flyover will be diverted at VV Statue towards Nirankari Junction. Only vehicles carrying Durga idols will be permitted to proceed along the restricted route.
Similarly, traffic approaching Iqbal Minar from Nirankari Junction will be diverted at the Old Saifabad Police Station towards Ravindra Bharathi and Masab Tank. Vehicles travelling from Iqbal Minar towards Secretariat Junction will be redirected onto the Telangana Talli Flyover towards Lower Tank Bund.
Traffic emerging from the Khairatabad Bada Ganesh lane and Mint Compound will not be permitted towards Necklace Rotary. Such vehicles will be diverted at Printing Press Junction towards Mint Compound or Rajiv Gandhi Statue.
Motorists travelling from Upper Tank Bund towards Secretariat Junction will be diverted at the Old Ambedkar Statue towards Liberty. Meanwhile, vehicles approaching Secretariat Junction from Liberty will be redirected at the same junction towards Upper Tank Bund. Only vehicles carrying Durga idols will be allowed to proceed along the Old Ambedkar Statue, Secretariat Junction, NTR Marg and Necklace Road stretch.
Traffic travelling from Upper Tank Bund towards Nallagutta Bridge and PV Marg, also known as Necklace Road, will be diverted at Sonabi Abdullah Masjid towards Minister Road via Karbala and Ranigunj. Similarly, vehicles approaching Necklace Road from Ranigunj and Minister Road will be diverted at Nallagutta crossroads towards Minister Road or Ranigunj.
Motorists advised to avoid 11 junctions
The Traffic Police have identified 11 major junctions where congestion is expected during the immersion processions.
These include VV Statue, Old Saifabad Police Station, Ravindra Bharathi, Hyderabad Traffic Police Junction, AR Petrol Pump, BJR Statue Circle, Basheerbagh, Liberty, Old Ambedkar Statue, Upper Tank Bund and Nallagutta crossroads.
Motorists were advised to avoid these locations between October 21 and the early hours of October 24 and plan alternative routes, particularly during peak traffic hours. The police said the restrictions would be imposed on a need basis rather than through continuous closure of all the identified roads.
Commuters can follow the Hyderabad Traffic Police’s official social media accounts on Facebook and X (@HYDTP) for traffic updates. Those requiring emergency travel assistance can contact the traffic helpline on 9010203626.
