Four fighters earned Ultimate Fighting Championship contracts on Week 10 to close out the season.
Smilla Sundell joins Gregory Foster, Douglas Lapa and Luis Francischinelli as UFC contract winners; Erick Visconde misses out
Gregory Foster (9-1) and Jason Asher (5-1) opened the card with a back-and-forth clash. Each fighter scored a knockdown, and Foster earned a unanimous decision after three rounds.
“Greg, happy birthday to Barbara and hope she gets well soon,” UFC CEO Dana White said. “The pace you set tonight, the shots you landed, the shots you took, you opened the show the way I love the show to be opened. And I’ve never been this excited to see a 34-year-old come into the UFC. Congratulations.”
Douglas Lapa (7-0) faced Davi Cabral (7-1) in a middleweight matchup. Both fighters hurt each other in the opening round before Lapa took control in the second. He dropped Cabral early in the third, prompting the referee to intervene after follow-up punches.
Although White sometimes awards contracts to both participants in an impressive fight, only Lapa received one. White also mistakenly identified the 27-year-old Brazilian as 34, correcting himself at the postfight news conference.
“Lapa, what an incredible fight,” White said. “Cabral is a tank. I didn’t even think that guy was human until he dropped him in the third round. I always say this: it takes two to make a great fight. He was definitely a great partner for you this evening. I guess the only way I can explain this is: the second 34-year-old I’m excited to see in the UFC. Congratulations; welcome.”
Luis Francischinelli (7-1) faced William Rentz (8-3) in a welterweight matchup. Rentz found early success with his grappling, but Francischinelli dropped him with a left hook and finished him with punches for a first-round technical knockout.
“Luis, you’re 7-1 now, you’re 170 pounds, you’re 10 feet tall,” White said while awarding the 6-foot-6 Brazilian a UFC contract. “Another fun guy that I’m excited to watch fight in the UFC. Congratulations.”
The 21-year-old Smilla Sundell (3-0) faced Alex Pereira’s sister, Aline Pereira (3-3), who is 15 years her senior. Sundell earned a unanimous decision. White said he wanted her to gain more experience before joining the UFC, but matchmaker Mick Maynard disagreed.
“Smilla, so I thought you had a great fight,” White said. “You obviously dominated. But you’re really young and I think you have nothing but time and you can get some more experience. Mick completely disagrees with me and thinks that you’re a serious talent in the women’s division. So, I’ve been outvoted tonight. Welcome to the UFC.”
Ilias Bulaid (9-1) and Erick Visconde (18-3) headlined the season finale. Visconde drew boos despite a dominant grappling performance that earned him a unanimous decision. He did not receive a UFC contract.
“Erick, I know you were fired up for this fight, yelling stuff at me on the side of the cage,” White said. “You put on a grappling masterclass tonight. But you did not do what I expect to see in the main event in the last episode of the Contender. Obviously, a f*cking tank and a really tough guy. Not tonight, my friend.”
