Mastercard has a new product, and its name leaves little to interpret. It’s called Stablecoin Security, and it is a risk screening service aimed at stablecoin transactions.
The service will launch in North America first. Mastercard plans to make it available globally in 2027.
Why does a card network care about screening dollar-pegged tokens? Its own research says crypto transactions see fraud rates approximately four times higher than non-crypto ones.
What Stablecoin Security actually does
The tool is designed to give institutions stronger fraud and compliance oversight on stablecoin activity. It is meant for the businesses that touch these transactions, not for retail holders checking their wallets.
Stablecoin Security is not being built from scratch. It extends Crypto Secure, an existing Mastercard platform that launched around 2022.
Crypto Secure already offers a handful of tools. These include dashboards for transaction visibility and anti-money laundering (AML) risk ratings for virtual asset service providers, or VASPs. It also packages broader fraud detection capabilities.
A quick translation: a VASP is any business that handles crypto on behalf of customers, such as an exchange or custodian. Crypto Secure grades how risky those businesses look from a money laundering perspective. Stablecoin Security appears to take that same logic and point it at stablecoin activity specifically.
Mastercard did not name any stablecoin issuers or protocols tied to the new service. It also did not give an exact launch date beyond the regional rollout plan. So for now, the key timeline markers are North America first, then the rest of the world in 2027.
The fraud math behind the launch
The most striking number in the announcement is the fraud gap. According to Mastercard’s internal research, fraud rates on crypto transactions run approximately four times higher than on non-crypto transactions.
Part of a larger stablecoin push
Stablecoin Security does not stand alone. It sits inside a wider Mastercard stablecoin strategy spanning 2025 and 2026.
That strategy includes network support for multiple regulated tokens. It also includes on-chain settlement functionality, which means using blockchains to finalize payments between parties.
The biggest piece on the roadmap is the Global Money Platform. Mastercard plans to launch it in October 2026, following its acquisition of BVNK.
What this means for the stablecoin market
The absence of named partners is worth watching. Mastercard has not said which issuers or protocols will plug into Stablecoin Security.
The timeline is the other variable. The North American launch comes first, the Global Money Platform is planned for October 2026, and worldwide availability of the screening service is targeted for 2027.
