A court in Enugu State has remanded one Emmanuel Okpara in correctional custody for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Rosemary Ugwu, with a pestle over an argument about who inflicted the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
The Enugu State Police Command, in a statement on X on Saturday, said the remand order followed the 30-year-old’s arrest on September 21.
The police said the suspect was arraigned on Friday, October 16, following the completion of the investigation.
“The court also ordered the transmission of the case file to the Attorney-General of Enugu State through the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and legal advice.
“The suspect was arrested on 21st September 2026 after being rescued from an angry mob. Investigations revealed that he allegedly murdered the victim in his apartment on 19th September 2026 by striking her head with a pestle, inflicting deep cuts on her head and neck with a machete, and severing her right wrist.
“The alleged crime reportedly followed an argument over who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The severed wrist and other exhibits were recovered from the apartment.”
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, assured that the command is committed to combating violent crime and ensuring the prompt prosecution of offenders.
