PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has directed law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said to hold further consultations on bills to limit the prime minister’s tenure, and separate the roles of the attorney-general and public prosecutor, following feedback from the Conference of Rulers.
Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said Azalina would engage with the parliamentary special select committee involved in drafting the constitutional amendments.
Fahmi, who is also the communications minister, said Anwar briefed the Cabinet today on his presentation of the bills to the rulers and the feedback received.
“After that, any amendments or improvements must be brought back to the Conference of Rulers,” he told a post-Cabinet press conference today.
Yesterday, the office of the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal said the Conference of Rulers deliberated on a consultation paper for the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, which proposes limiting the prime minister’s tenure.
The rulers were also briefed on the Constitution (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2026, which seeks to separate the roles of the attorney-general and public prosecutor.
The bill to limit the prime minister’s tenure was first tabled on Feb 23 but failed to secure the required two-thirds majority at its second reading on March 2, missing the threshold by two votes.
The bill to separate the roles of the attorney-general and public prosecutor was first tabled on Feb 23. Its second reading was postponed on July 14 to allow the government to present the proposed amendments to the Conference of Rulers.
