Caleb Williams began his 2026 NFL season with one thought: to go beyond the playoffs. But two games in, he injured his hamstring. Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent stepped up for him to hold the fort until he returned stronger than ever.He missed three games and returned for Weeks 6 and 7. A side of him that hadn’t been seen before was out in the open for everyone to see. He took all the criticism and adversity and turned it into a ball of motivation to grab back-to-back gridiron victories. Now, this competitive spirit has been witnessed by the sports world before - in NBA legend Michael Jordan. That’s what NBC Sports’ ProFootballTalk hosts Mike Florio and Chris Simms discussed: Caleb Williams’ ability to find motivation in criticism and adversity draws steadfast comparisons to basketball legend Michael Jordan’s fierce competitive mindset.
Caleb Williams turns criticism into motivation
FOX Sports host Colin Cowherd also defended Caleb Williams. Cowherd called Caleb a generational talent, a modern athlete. Cowherd argued that modern athletes are more emotional and heavily influenced by their online presence. The Chicago Bears quarterback faced unnecessary criticism after his hamstring injury. Cowherd previously defended Williams when he covered him during his USC days - for his fingernails and jumping into the stands to cry with his family after USC’s 10-point loss to Washington.
The FOX Sports host then played a clip of Williams where the quarterback opened up about outside criticism that affected him during his hamstring injury recovery. The 24-year-old quarterback acknowledged that questions surrounding his toughness and character only motivated him further. However, his primary motivation had always been to return to the gridiron, help his teammates, and address the team’s recent struggles.“I care about the team, the organization, winning, being out there,my teammates, all of that. I care, and that’s the biggest thing,” Williams said. “This is what I love to do. This puts a smile on my face. It’s everything to me.So, not being able to be out there was frustrating. That was more of the tears, or whatever that was. The other half of it was everybody making jokes and all of that, but that doesn’t bother me.My character has been attacked…since for a while. And so, it’s just another motivating factor when I get out there and get going again.”The 2024 first-round first-overall pick’s comments depict his competitive spirit. He doesn’t allow criticism to distract him from his main goal.Much like his head coach, Ben Johnson, who didn’t even smile when his team’s player kicked a record-breaking field goal. Why? Because that game victory is temporary. He wants the Super Bowl. He wants the ultimate goal of playing football - the Lombardi Trophy.
Why is Michael Jordan a fitting Caleb Williams comparison
“He [Caleb Williams] does have an edge about him. And perspective.
And an inner thought that’s very mature. And definitely, extremely motivated. Psycho in a good way type of guy. And he’s not content just being like the man.He wants to be The Greatest of All Times. He wants to be the [Michael] Jordan of Chicago and football. He embraces that,” Chris Simms told Mike Florio on NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk’s Oct. 22 episode. Williams’ drive to improve through adversity mirrors Jordan’s competitive approach. Now, why is Michael Jordan a fitting comparison to Caleb Williams? The NBA legend built his legacy on relentless competitiveness, mental toughness, and a rare ability to transform slights into motivation. His competitive drive led the Chicago Bulls to win six NBA Championships during the 1990s. He became one of the most celebrated athletes in Chicago’s sports history. Williams, on the other hand, could be trying to become like him.
He wants to create his own legacy with the Chicago Bears.Since he returned, he has posted his first two wins. He leads the league with a 72.5% completion rate after leading the Bears to a 30-24 win over the Drake Maye-led New England Patriots in Week 7.Maye is from the same 2024 draft class as that of Williams. Even though Maye has been to a Super Bowl and Williams hasn’t, that fact also could have become a motivating factor for the Chicago Bears quarterback in the Week 7 matchup. And we know that he won that too.
