TrendForce said China’s polysilicon inventories remained above 560,000 metric tons despite expected production cuts in October. Persistent oversupply and weak downstream demand continued to weigh on prices.
TrendForce’s EnergyTrend said on Oct. 22 that polysilicon inventories in China remained above 560,000 metric tons, despite an expected month-on-month decline of approximately 20,000 metric tons in domestic production in October. Supply continued to slightly exceed demand from downstream ingot manufacturers. EnergyTrend said polysilicon producers had discussed maintaining selling prices at or above CNY 43 ($6.32)/kg, although the proposed price floor does not necessarily reflect actual transaction prices. Elevated inventories and weak downstream demand continued to weigh on prospects for a sustained price recovery.
DataBM, a Chinese renewable energy data provider, said centralized solar module procurement tenders totaled approximately 6.6 GW between Oct. 3 and Oct. 16, up from 410 MW in the preceding two-week period. The increase was largely driven by major procurement programs from state-owned enterprises. Meanwhile, projects with announced contract awards or shortlisted bidders totaled 2.81 GW, down 35.4% from 4.35 GW in the previous period. The figures, released on Oct. 19, point to a recovery in tendering activity following China’s National Day holiday, while contract awards remained relatively subdued.
China’s Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment Li Gao said on Oct. 21 that China plans to raise concerns about unilateralism and trade protectionism at the COP31 climate summit in November. Li called for the free flow of green and low-carbon products and technologies, warning that trade barriers could undermine global climate action. Chinese solar modules and other clean energy products have faced increasing trade restrictions in the United States and Europe in recent years, putting the relationship between climate policy and trade measures in focus ahead of the summit.
China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) issued implementation guidelines on Oct. 21 to promote the integration of coal-fired power generation with renewable energy. The guidelines outline five integration models, including coordinated power transmission from renewable energy projects and coal-fired power plants, cleaner heating through combined heat and power facilities, and the integration of renewables with captive coal-fired generation. The measures encourage coal plant flexibility upgrades, transmission capacity expansion, and coordinated operations with wind and solar projects to improve renewable energy integration. Eligible projects may qualify for financial support under existing government programs. The policy aims to facilitate additional renewable energy deployment while reducing emissions from coal-fired generation.
Longi has signed a global supply framework agreement with French energy group Engie covering 800 MW of back-contact (BC) solar modules and 500 MWh of energy storage products over the next two years. Announced on Oct. 19, the agreement covers modules from Longi’s Hi-MO 9 series for projects in Europe and other international markets. It follows the companies’ cooperation on the 1.5 GW Khazna solar project in the United Arab Emirates. The companies did not disclose the contract value or project-specific allocations. The framework volumes do not necessarily represent firm purchase orders.
