United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Ousainu Darboe has sharply criticised President Adama Barrow’s administration, describing the upcoming December 5 presidential election as the country’s “final opportunity” to change direction.
Speaking at a rally in Brikama over the weekend, Darboe accused the government of neglecting key sectors, mismanaging public funds, and failing to address irregular migration. He argued that spending priorities have not adequately met the needs of Gambians, particularly in agriculture and education.
On national security, Darboe raised concerns about rising violent crime, including killings, and blamed what he described as weaknesses in the country’s security system. He pledged that, if elected, a UDP-led government would reform the sector, improve the welfare of security personnel, and make service in the forces a more attractive career. “Members of the security services should be able to retire with dignity rather than face poverty or homelessness after years of service,” he said.
Darboe also promised to revive the economy and tackle institutional corruption within five years, insisting that the UDP has the educated and skilled personnel needed to drive national development. He urged supporters to turn their political enthusiasm into votes, stressing that the December 5 election represents a decisive moment for the nation’s future.
