IMPHAL, Oct 14: The Naga People's Union (NPU), Imphal, has condemned the alleged human rights violation by the police in connection with the release and re-arrest of Cheneichung Chiru of Bungte Chiru village in Kangpokpi sub-division.
Addressing a press conference at Manipur Press Club today, NPU, Imphal president M Ngaranmi stated that Cheneichung Chiru was released from police custody on October 9 after being arrested on October 2 but was subsequently re-arrested.
Expressing suspicion that Cheneichung might have been rearrested under pressure from Kuki groups, he urged the Government and the police department to refrain from violating the human rights of individuals who had not been found guilty of any offence.
Ngaranmi appealed for the immediate release of Cheneichung Chiru, asserting that a person released by a Court should not be subjected to further harassment.
He also urged the people to recognise the indigenous communities of Manipur and stated that the time has come for the Naga and Meitei communities to work together.
Recalling an earlier incident, he said one Chiru man was shot dead by Kuki militants.
Stating that the Chiru community is one of the smallest tribes in Manipur and also a small community among the Nagas, Ngaranmi appealed to larger communities to protect vulnerable groups and ensure that they are not subjected to human rights violations.
