Farmers hoping to escape hunger and poverty through agricultural support could be left behind if corruption creeps into the selection of beneficiaries for a K25 billion development project in Malawi.
Hope Field Initiative (HFI), which plans to establish 20 additional farmers’ clubs across Maseko Ngoni communities, has acknowledged problems involving corruption and compromised beneficiary selection during its pilot phase.
HFI President Apostle Clifford Kawinga raised the concerns during a meeting with Inkosi Ya Makhosi Gomani V and other traditional leaders, saying the issue had been discussed ahead of the initiative’s next phase, expected to begin in January 2027.
For a farmer whose harvest barely lasts until the next season, missing out on agricultural support could mean continuing to struggle with food shortages and limited income. Yet the available information does not establish how many farmers may have been affected or whether specific households were unfairly excluded.
The initiative plans to organise farmers into clubs of 200 members, with each club having a 10-member leadership committee. As the programme expands under a K25 billion, five-year development project, the process of identifying beneficiaries will be critical to ensuring that support is distributed fairly.
Kawinga said some people had compromised beneficiary allocation, raising concerns about the integrity of the selection process. However, he did not identify specific individuals responsible or detail particular cases of wrongdoing in the supplied interview.
Inkosi Ya Makhosi Gomani V said traditional leaders would be expected to monitor implementation, promote accountability and ensure communities receive accurate information about the initiative.
“Our role is to make sure that there is inclusivity. We are the watch guards, we are the protectors,” he said.
But assurances of accountability will need to be matched by practical safeguards, including clear eligibility criteria, transparent beneficiary lists and a reliable way for farmers to challenge decisions they believe are unfair.
The clubs are intended to help farmers produce crops, engage in livestock farming and generate income for their households. Whether these ambitions translate into better food security will depend not only on the support available, but also on whether eligible farmers can access it fairly.
For now, the reported concerns leave important questions unanswered: what went wrong during the pilot phase, whether any farmers suffered as a result and what action was taken to address the problems.
As the initiative prepares to expand, its credibility will depend on how openly those questions are answered. For farmers hoping to improve their livelihoods, the real measure of success will be whether opportunities reach them on merit rather than through compromised selection. Ok
