Kangpokpi, Oct15: Tensions have resurfaced along the inter-district borders of Manipur after the Kuki Inpi South-West Sadar Hills (KI-SWSH) issued a three-day ultimatum demanding an immediate halt to the construction of an alternative road by residents of Naga-inhabited Konsa village.
In a statement issued through its Department of Information and Publicity, the Kuki apex body expressed “strong objection and total disapproval” of the reported attempt by Konsa villagers to construct a separate transit route through Kuki land, allegedly with government support, bypassing the existing public road.
The KI-SWSH maintained that the existing public thoroughfare remains accessible and unobstructed for ordinary movement, arguing that a separate route is unnecessary.
The organisation warned that failure to stop construction within three days would trigger widespread public agitation across the region.
The dispute also involves the movement and burial of mortal remains. The KI-SWSH stated that the movement of bodies along public roads remains unrestricted and insisted that six deceased individuals be transported through the existing route to their designated village cemetery.
It also prohibited attempts to conduct burials on land under its jurisdiction, citing concerns over potential disruptions to public order.
Calling for intervention by the state government and district administration, the Kuki body urged the authorities to act with “impartiality, prudence, and foresight” to prevent further escalation.
The organisation warned that the authorities would bear full responsibility for any untoward incidents arising from administrative oversight.
The latest dispute comes amid continuing ethnic tensions in Manipur, where disagreements over land, road access and movement between communities remain sensitive issues.
