With a modest ceremony, Athens marked on Monday 82 years of Liberation from the Nazi occupation (1941-1944) during the WWII.
The ceremony to commemorate the Liberation of Athens started with the hoist of the Greek flag on the Acropolis at 11 o’ clock in the morning in the presence of President of the Republic Constantine Tassoulas and Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.
A wreath-laying ceremony followed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at syntagma Square and in front of the Parliament.
On October 12, 1944, thousands of people poured into the streets to celebrate the Liberation and the withdrawal of the Nazi troops after 3,5 years of hardship.
In contrast to several other countries, Greece does not celebrate the Liberation and the end of the War, but the start of it on 28. October 1940, when the fascist and Axis member Italy invaded the country.
