Grenada is being represented at the 4th Continental Athletes’ Forum in San José, Costa Rica, where athlete leaders from across the Americas are meeting to discuss funding opportunities, athlete welfare, governance and development ahead of the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima.
Representing Grenada are HazelAnn Regis-Buckles, chairperson of the Grenada Athletes’ Commission and a former Olympian and Pan American Games silver medalist, and deputy chairperson Jenebi Benoit, a Caribbean and Central American Swimming Championship medallist. The 12–14 October forum is organised by Panam Sports with support from International Olympic Solidarity and brings together athlete representatives from National Olympic Committees throughout the region.
Panam Sports Secretary General Jimena Saldaña said the forum provides an opportunity for athlete leaders to share experiences and gain practical tools to strengthen athlete commissions in their respective countries. “With the significant support of International Olympic Solidarity, we are organising this forum, which means a great deal to our athletes. It is a unique opportunity for our athletes to hear from interesting speakers, share their own experiences, and take back to their countries important development tools so that their commissions can continue to grow and continue to be heard within the Olympic Movement in the Americas.”
Participants will examine initiatives aimed at improving athlete representation, expanding access to funding and scholarships, promoting safe sport programmes, and supporting athletes throughout and beyond their competitive careers.
The 3-day programme includes discussions on Olympic Solidarity funding opportunities, anti-doping education, mental health support, athlete welfare, financial literacy, and career transition planning. Delegates will also hear from current and former elite athletes, sports administrators and international experts on best practices for athlete advocacy and commission development.
For Grenada, the discussions could provide valuable insights into strengthening athlete representation and identifying new opportunities for local competitors seeking access to scholarships, training support and international development programmes.
The attendance of Regis-Buckles and Benoit ensures Grenada is represented in discussions that help shape athlete-focused initiatives across the Americas.
Lessons learned from the forum could assist the Grenada Athletes’ Commission in its ongoing efforts to improve athlete support, increase awareness of available resources, and strengthen pathways for athletes during and after their sporting careers.
