A medal from one of English rugby’s most celebrated nights has changed hands for £54,000, while a pair of shorts associated with football icon Eric Cantona and other sporting keepsakes attracted collectors at an auction in England.
The sale, held by sports memorabilia specialist Budds on October 13, featured 332 lots spanning rugby, football, cricket, boxing, golf and tennis, according to the auction house’s official results. The headline item was the 2003 Rugby World Cup winner’s medal belonging to former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio. The silver-gilt medal fetched a hammer price of £54,000, close to the lower end of its pre-sale estimate of £50,000 to £80,000.
Twelve items from Dallaglio’s collection sold, with the auction house reporting a combined total of £130,650 including the buyer’s premium. The auction offered a glimpse into the market for sporting memorabilia, where objects associated with defining victories can carry a value that extends well beyond their material worth.
England’s historic victory in Sydney
The medal commemorates England’s 20-17 victory over Australia in the Rugby World Cup final on November 22, 2003.
Played in Sydney, the match went into extra time before Jonny Wilkinson’s famous drop goal secured England’s first men’s Rugby World Cup title. Dallaglio, who captained England during his career, was part of the squad that lifted the trophy. The medal was made of silver-gilt and remained in its original fitted case, complete with a green and blue ribbon. Its reverse listed the Australian cities that hosted matches during the tournament, according to Budds’ description.
The object therefore preserved a tangible connection to a landmark moment in English rugby history.Dallaglio’s collection included several other reminders of his playing career. His red British and Irish Lions cap sold for £11,000, while his England international cap fetched £8,000. Both attracted strong bidding, with the Lions cap achieving twice the upper end of its pre-sale estimate. His purple World Rugby Hall of Fame cap, estimated at £500 to £800, sold for £2,400.His 2003 Six Nations Championship winners’ medal fetched £7,500, while the medal he received as a runner-up at the 2007 Rugby World Cup sold for £5,000. A medal from the 2004 Heineken Cup final, won with Wasps, brought £4,400. Five pewter tankards from different points in his career and associated sporting activities sold for £1,600.However, not every item found a buyer. Budds’ catalogue listed several other Dallaglio medals and awards that failed to meet their reserves, demonstrating that an association with a famous athlete does not guarantee a sale at every price.
Cantona’s shorts and a World Cup television table
The auction extended well beyond rugby. Among its football-related curiosities were shorts associated with Eric Cantona, the former Manchester United forward whose playing career and outspoken personality made him one of the Premier League’s most recognisable figures. The collection also included shirts associated with players such as Harry Kane, alongside memorabilia from other generations of football.Another unusual lot was the table used by presenters in the BBC television studio during the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Formerly owned by singer Robbie Williams, it sold for £800 after attracting interest from bidders in Britain and the United States, The Guardian reported. The table offered a different kind of sporting connection: rather than coming from the pitch, it was associated with the television coverage through which millions followed the tournament. The auction also included a 2008-09 Manchester United shirt associated with Cristiano Ronaldo, which sold for £6,000. A shirt worn by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the 1999-2000 season fetched £2,200, while a signed Arsenal shirt associated with Ray Parlour sold for £4,000. These results illustrated the range of items attracting collectors, from match-related clothing to objects connected with memorable teams and seasons.
Why sporting memorabilia commands attention
The Dallaglio auction comes amid a wider boom in high-value sports collectables. In its October 16 report, The Guardian highlighted the growing market for match-worn football shirts and other objects associated with iconic sporting moments, noting that international buyers and online bidding have widened the pool of potential collectors. Some sales operate on a vastly different scale. A jersey worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals sold for more than £10 million in October 2026, according to the newspaper.
In football, the shirt Diego Maradona wore during Argentina’s 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England was sold for more than £7 million in 2022.Dallaglio’s medal belongs to a different price bracket, but its significance is rooted in the same connection between an object and a defining sporting achievement. For collectors, the appeal lies not simply in the metal, fabric or craftsmanship, but in the history attached to it.The sale also comes against a difficult financial backdrop for the former England captain. The Guardian reported that Dallaglio had been declared bankrupt a year earlier, while The Telegraph, in a report republished by Yahoo Sports, linked the sale of his memorabilia to his financial circumstances.Ultimately, the £54,000 hammer price placed a piece of England’s 2003 triumph in a new owner’s hands. The auction’s other lots, from Cantona-associated shorts to a television studio table, showed how sporting history can survive in objects that might otherwise appear ordinary, becoming valuable to those who want to own a fragment of the game’s past.
