The bird flu outbreak exposes gaps in wetland data, water policy, and ecological monitoring. We need better coordination across connected wetland systems.
Australia’s H5 bird flu outbreak is rightly being managed as a national biosecurity challenge. But it is also exposing a less visible policy problem: we still do not understand well enough how Australia’s wetlands function as connected ecological systems, particularly the thousands of smaller, temporary and privately managed wetlands between the major systems on which policy and investment tend to focus.
By October 14, Australia had recorded 706 confirmed H5-positive wildlife events and received more than 63,000 reports through official channels.
