Bangladesh’s dengue situation has taken an alarming turn, with the number of hospitalisations approaching 100,000 and the death toll surpassing 300, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Four more people died from dengue in the 24 hours ending at 8am on Sunday (October 11), raising the total number of deaths this year to 303.
During the same period, 2,193 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, marking the highest number of hospital admissions recorded in a single day so far this year.
According to the latest DGHS bulletin released on Sunday, a total of 99,275 dengue patients have been hospitalised nationwide since January.
The situation has remained particularly concerning in recent weeks, with October recording 58 deaths in its first 10 days.
September was the deadliest month of the year, accounting for 148 fatalities, followed by August with 43 deaths, July with 36 and June with 13.
The health authorities also recorded one death in May and two deaths each in January and February.
The latest figures indicate a continued rise in the dengue burden, raising concerns over the growing pressure on hospitals and the need for stronger mosquito-control measures across the country.
Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of new hospitalisations, with 1,030 patients admitted during the reporting period.
Among other divisions, Khulna reported 304 admissions, Chattogram 293, Barishal 236, Rajshahi 160, Rangpur 84, Mymensingh 70 and Sylhet 16.
Of the four latest fatalities, two were reported in Khulna Division, while Chattogram and Rajshahi recorded one death each.
Meanwhile, 1,796 dengue patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals during the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries this year to 92,803, according to DGHS figures.
The latest surge comes as the country continues to battle the mosquito-borne disease, with health experts stressing the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding sites, particularly stagnant water, to prevent further infections.
Bangladesh recorded 102,861 dengue hospitalisations and 413 deaths in 2025. With the 2026 hospitalisation figure already nearing last year’s total, the latest situation has heightened concerns over the continuing spread of the disease.
The DGHS figures reflect reported hospital admissions, meaning the actual number of dengue infections nationwide may be higher, as patients who do not seek hospital treatment are not necessarily included in the official count.
