Seaweed may not be the first thing that springs to mind when planning a weekend in Sagres – but Rota das Algas (Seaweed Route) is hoping to change that.
The seaweed-focused event returns for its third edition on November 7 and 8, bringing together early-morning coastal foraging at Praia do Castelejo with scientific insight, sustainability and a taste of what marine algae can bring to the table.

The initiative is organised by local hotel memmo Baleeira, in partnership with Rota das Algas, a project created to promote ocean literacy and encourage a better understanding and more sustainable use of macroalgae.
At the heart of the programme is Joana Duarte, founder of Rota das Algas, a chef with a background in marine biology, biotechnology and oceanography.

The weekend begins bright and early on Saturday, November 7 at 7.30am, with a Seaweed Foraging session at Praia do Castelejo led by Duarte.
Participants will explore the coastline while learning to identify different species of seaweed and understand their characteristics, potential uses and role in marine ecosystems.

The experience then moves from the shore to the kitchen, with a seaweed fermentation workshop followed by a themed Rota das Algas & Fornaria lunch, where seaweed will play a starring role in dishes designed to showcase flavours and ingredients from the ocean.
A second Seaweed Foraging session will take place on Sunday, November 8, also at 7.30am, offering another opportunity to discover the marine biodiversity of the Sagres coastline.
For memmo Baleeira, hosting the initiative for a third consecutive year is also a way of strengthening its connection to Sagres and the surrounding natural environment, while encouraging visitors to look at local marine resources in a different way, it says in a statement.
