Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) plans to make environmental, social and governance reporting mandatory for its members as it rolls out a dashboard covering 326 factories.
“We will make ESG reporting mandatory for all our member factories,” BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan said at the dashboard’s Oct. 19 launch in Dhaka, The Business Standard reported. He did not give a start date for the requirement, according to the newspaper.
Khan also said BGMEA would work with the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association on reporting.
The platform’s initial 326 factories represent about 13 percent of BGMEA’s roughly 2,500 active registered members. Those facilities employ 584,371 workers, according to the portal, which puts women’s share of the surveyed workforce at 54.2 percent.
The data also carries an important qualification. BGMEA’s methodology says the ESG information was supplied by factories through a walk-through survey.
“The reported information has not been independently audited or verified by a third party,” the site states. It describes the disclosures as indicative rather than independently assured performance or certification.
The dashboard collects information on energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, waste management, workforce demographics and renewable-energy installations. It also presents indicators on factory safety, grievance policies, audits and sustainability reporting.
Users can filter the public dashboard by reporting year, region, factory structure and product or process type. A separate data explorer offers aggregated comparisons, while a Vision 2030 tracker measures performance against the association’s sustainability goals.
The portal lists the Danish Embassy in Dhaka as a supporter and BRAC University’s BRAC Institute of Governance and Development as its research partner. Mapped in Bangladesh, an initiative implemented by the university’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, developed and maintains the technical platform.
The current dataset comes from one survey exercise conducted across 2025 and 2026. The platform’s methodology says those years do not represent separate annual snapshots. A related assessment of building permits, structural, fire and electrical safety, and worker safety and welfare covers 266 of the 326 factories.
Visitors see codes such as FAC-042 in place of factory names. Contact details and exact locations are not shown. The site only publishes comparisons for groups of at least 10 factories, making it harder to identify a facility from its figures.
The portal separately outlines a verification process involving supporting documents, automated checks for missing or unusual figures and BGMEA staff reviews. Its documentation says factories can be asked to clarify discrepancies.
Environmental performance makes up 40 percent of a factory’s ESG score, with the rest split equally between social and governance measures. The portal sets those weights itself and scores factories against their peers.
BGMEA is pitching the reporting push as preparation for sustainability-data requests from international buyers. The portal’s Vision 2030 tracker sets a goal of reporting by all active member factories. For now, about 87 percent remain outside its dataset.
