Apple is reportedly testing a large foldable iPad with a display measuring up to 20 inches when unfolded, potentially taking design inspiration from Huawei’s MateBook Fold.
According to Chinese tipster Kang, Apple is experimenting with a foldable tablet that could offer a laptop-sized screen while maintaining a compact design when folded.
The report supports earlier predictions from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested that Apple could introduce its first foldable iPad around 2028.

Design and Display
The upcoming device is expected to feature an 18- to 20-inch foldable display, allowing users to switch between a large tablet and a more portable form factor.
Previous reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggested that Apple was developing a device resembling two iPad Pro tablets placed side by side.
Apple is reportedly focusing on reducing the visibility of the display crease to create a smoother viewing experience.
According to Kuo, the foldable iPad will use ultra-thin glass (UTG), with Corning expected to supply the glass materials exclusively.
General Interface Solutions (GIS) will reportedly handle glass cutting, edge treatment, quality inspection, and packaging.
Both suppliers are also involved in Apple’s broader foldable device development.
Inspired by Huawei’s Foldable Laptop
Apple’s rumored design could share similarities with Huawei’s MateBook Fold, which already offers a large foldable display.
Huawei introduced its latest MateBook Fold in August 2026, featuring an 18-inch dual-layer OLED screen and a Kirin X90 Plus processor.
The device measures just 7.3mm thick on one side when unfolded and includes a built-in stand and stylus support.
When folded, it takes on a compact notebook-like design.
The MateBook Fold starts at approximately $3,750 and comes in Sky White, Phantom Black, and Streamer Gold.
However, it remains unclear whether Apple will adopt a similar design or develop a different approach.
Expected Launch
Apple’s foldable iPad is reportedly being developed for a possible launch in 2028.
According to earlier industry estimates, first-year shipments could range between 500,000 and one million units.
The relatively limited production forecast reflects the technical challenges and potentially high manufacturing costs associated with large foldable displays.
Apple has not officially confirmed the device, its specifications, or its launch timeline.
