What Does the PhD Scholarship Cover
UBC provides eligible full-time doctoral students with CAD 40,000 annually for their first four years. The university introduced this minimum funding level in September 2026.
Students can receive financial support through internal and external scholarships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships.
The funding package provides at least CAD 160,000 over four years. However, this amount combines different funding sources rather than representing one standalone scholarship.
According to UBC’s historical funding statistics, the Linguistics PhD program recorded median annual funding of CAD 45,596 before tuition and fees. The median amount remaining after tuition and fees was CAD 36,267.
These historical figures do not reflect the new minimum funding policy. They also do not guarantee that future students will receive the same amounts.
Tuition Fees for International Students
According to UBC’s published tuition information, international PhD students pay approximately CAD 10,081.65 in first-year tuition fees. Domestic students pay CAD 5,738.52 annually.
Students must also pay additional university fees of approximately CAD 1,203.20 per year.
Eligible international students can receive an International Tuition Award of up to CAD 3,200 annually. This award reduces tuition expenses but does not automatically cover the full amount.
Students generally pay tuition and other university fees from their funding packages unless they receive additional financial support.
Eligibility Criteria for PhD in Linguistics
Applicants must meet UBC’s graduate admission requirements and demonstrate strong academic preparation for advanced research in Linguistics.
The university normally requires a master’s degree or at least one year of graduate-level training.
In exceptional cases, applicants with a bachelor’s degree and outstanding academic performance can qualify for direct PhD admission.
UBC generally expects academic performance equivalent to a B+ grade or 76% under its grading system. International students must also meet the relevant country-specific requirements.
Candidates should have completed substantial coursework in syntax, phonology, phonetics, and semantics.
Applicants who lack preparation in one or two of these subjects can still be considered. However, they may need to complete additional undergraduate courses during their first year.
Can Pakistani Students Apply
Yes, Pakistani students can apply for the PhD in Linguistics if they meet the university’s academic and admission requirements.
According to UBC’s country-specific criteria, doctoral applicants from Pakistan generally need a recognized master’s degree, MPhil, or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
The university normally requires first-class or first-division academic standing.
Candidates must also demonstrate appropriate academic preparation and research potential in Linguistics or related fields.
Students with backgrounds in language studies, Psychology, Philosophy, or other related disciplines can explore admission if they have completed the required core Linguistics coursework.
English Language Requirements
| English Language Test | Minimum Overall Score |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 |
| Duolingo English Test | 125 |
| TOEFL iBT (older 120-point scale) | 90 |
| TOEFL iBT (new 6-point scale) | 4.5 |
Documents Required for UBC PhD Admissions
Applicants must submit academic transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions and provide details of their educational qualifications.
The Department of Linguistics requires three recommendation letters, a statement of intent, an academic writing sample, and information about previously completed Linguistics courses.
The statement of intent must not exceed two pages. Applicants should explain their research interests, academic goals, and reasons for choosing UBC.
Candidates must also provide details of their previous courses in phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics. These details can include course outlines, reading lists, textbooks, and relevant academic assignments.
The writing sample should demonstrate the applicant’s academic and analytical abilities. The department prefers a paper related to Linguistics but also accepts work from another academic field.
How to Apply for Linguistics Scholarships in Canada
Interested candidates must apply through the University of British Columbia’s official graduate admission system.
Applicants should first review the PhD in Linguistics eligibility criteria and confirm that their previous academic qualifications meet the university’s requirements.
They should then explore the department’s research areas and identify faculty members whose interests match their proposed research.
UBC does not require applicants to secure a supervisor before applying. The department assigns an interim supervisor during the first year, while students select their research supervisors later.
After preparing the required documents, candidates can complete the online graduate application.
Applicants must provide their personal and academic information, upload supporting documents, and pay the application fee.
The university has set the application fee at CAD 168.25 for international applicants and CAD 120.75 for domestic applicants.
Candidates must also provide the details of three referees so the university can request recommendation letters.
