Narasaraopet MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu on Sunday (October 11, 2026) inaugurated the Lalitha Brain Stimulation Centre at Lalitha PVS Institute of Medical Sciences in Guntur. The new facility introduces repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) therapy as part of comprehensive stroke rehabilitation services.
It aims to improve recovery and quality of life among stroke survivors and patients with selected neurological disorders through advanced technology and multidisciplinary care, said Dr. P. Vijaya, Head of Department of Neurosciences.
Dr. Vijaya said that non-invasive rTMS procedure uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific brain regions and modulate neural activity. It may support rehabilitation for selected patients experiencing limb weakness, speech difficulties, spasticity, and certain cognitive impairments. However, it complements conventional rehabilitation rather than replacing physiotherapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy.
She added that the hospital has also been providing VitalStim therapy for selected patients with post-stroke swallowing difficulties for the past year. Other rehabilitation facilities include robotic gloves, botulinum toxin injections to manage muscle stiffness, advanced gait trainers, and swallowing rehabilitation.
The institute integrates neurological assessment, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy to address individual recovery needs.
While timely treatment is crucial during the acute phase of stroke, specialised rehabilitation plays a significant role in helping survivors regain mobility, communication abilities and independence.
The institute aims to strengthen its stroke care services, combining clinical expertise, advanced technologies and coordinated rehabilitation to improve functional outcomes and patients’ quality of life.
