Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud questioned the Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s (BRS) silence on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged it was because of an alleged tacit understanding with the BJP.
Addressing the media at Gandhi Bhavan, he asked why BRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and senior leaders K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao had not spoken out against the Election Commission of India when the entire country was questioning it.
While parties across the country, barring the BJP and its allies, were opposing the exercise, the BRS leadership had remained silent, he alleged. He suspected that the BRS was reluctant to criticise the BJP because of the possibility of arrests in the Formula E case and the CBI investigation into the Kaleshwaram project.
Mr. Goud claimed that around 90 lakh votes were being removed in the State on various grounds and asserted that the Congress would fight to protect every eligible voter’s right to vote.
Referring to West Bengal and Bihar, he alleged that electoral processes were being used to prevent opposition parties, including those led by Mamata Banerjee and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, from winning elections.
Taking aim at the BRS leadership, he also questioned the source of the wealth of its leaders, particularly Mr. K.T. Rama Rao, and alleged that BRS was avoiding the SIR issue out of fear that the Centre would enquire into his wealth.
He cited the tenures of former Chief Election Commissioners T.N. Seshan, J.M. Lyngdoh and T.S. Krishnamurthy as examples of periods when electoral exercises were conducted fairly.
