With every new decade comes more wisdom, more confidence…and a new fine line that proves you’ve completed another spin around the sun. Whether it's a new crease in your collection of crow’s feet, deeper laugh lines that prove your sense of humor is still intact, or tech neck from all that late night scrolling. As natural as they are, watching time and gravity take its toll on your skin can be panic inducing. But before you book that standing appointment for neuromodulators, try adding one of the best face-firming creams to smooth and re-sculpt your contours.
Don’t get it twisted: face-firming creams are not your plain old moisturizer, but they’re also not Botox in a bottle, either. “These types of creams are comprised of collagen builders, hydration boosters, and barrier strengtheners to stimulate collagen production and soften the look of lines,” says Nazanin Saedi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Philadelphia. Alongside the best retinoids or vitamin Cs, a face-firming cream typically uses ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and peptides that will help plump up the skin and give you that instant smoother, firmer look.
To find the best formulas, we sent a lineup of dermatologist-recommended products to testers over the age of 30 to see which delivered noticeable results for their skin type. The best ones won’t freeze your face, but will make lines less obvious and give you a sculpted finish. There are options for every concern, whether you’re looking for a smooth canvas for a makeup beat, something to help replenish dry skin, or retinol alternative if you skew sensitive. For the happy medium between hydration and something that will actually soften lines, read on for the best creams to help you defy gravity.

| Features a blend of both vitamin C and retinol to address fine lines and protect skin from free radical damage | It’s potent so you have to start slow and increase your tolerance if you have very sensitive skin |
| Lightweight and creamy texture | |
| Available at your local drugstore |
One of our favorite antiaging moisturizers, we made this pick our best overall because it features the gold standard trio for addressing both sagging and lines. There’s vitamin C, which helps even out skin tone and zap away discoloration due to sun damage and age spots. Next up is hyaluronic acid, to penetrate dry, cracked skin for a dewy, bouncy finish. Rounding the formula out is retinol to boost collagen production and cell turnover, smoothing out lines and supporting skin’s structure. Its potency is unmatched for its price tag (at $20!) and it really strikes the balance of everything a good firming cream should be: Making lines and texture less noticeable without making skin look artificially smooth.
“L’Oréal has always been a heavy hitter in the drugstore aisle and this triple-powered hydrator is no exception. I love how it gives my skin an immediately dewy look without feeling greasy. I’m usually skeptical of using retinol during the day—a combination of melasma and Irish genes means the sun and I are not homies—but this is formulated with pro-retinol (a gentler, stabler version of retinol), making it safer for daytime use. I still doused my skin in SPF, just in case. Pro tip from a pale girl: If you’re using any retinol products in your skincare routine, you definitely don’t want to skip the sun protection. I do appreciate that the brand also makes an SPF 30 version, for those of you who don’t want to add another layer on top. It did feel a bit tingly after initial application but nothing uncomfortable or sting-y. I’m not a huge fan of the heavy scent—I’m super sensitive to fragrance right now, another fun side effect no one warned me was coming with perimenopause—so be advised that if you’re also not a fan of face creams with aromas, this one is on the stronger side. But to be honest, the benefits for your skin are so primo, I’m okay with a little eau de face cream in the a.m. if my skin keeps looking this energized and healthy.”—Megan McIntyre, Glamour contributor

| Non-greasy texture feels great when you apply it | Addresses crepiness |
| Makes skin look and feel glowy |
A great firming moisturizer, like this revamped one from Charlotte Tilbury, does such a stellar job at smoothing skin that it might just replace your usual makeup primer. If you love a full beat, start with this thick-but-not-greasy cream before foundation to soften, plump, and firm drooping or sagging skin, then watch as fine lines melt away over time. It has hyaluronic acid which deeply hydrates skin to help keep makeup from flaking away and pilling, while a unique peptide gently add volume sans a filler needle. We also like that it features vitamin C to brighten and give skin a touch of glow—plus vitamin E to soothe and combat redness. Your perfect makeup base awaits in this little jar.
Glamour contributor Gill Cohen says:
“One of the things I’ve always liked most about this wrinkle cream is the texture—it gives my skin that instant glow, which I appreciate even more now I feel like I’ve lost some of my natural radiance with age. This new version felt very similar to the original when I first used it, maybe just a little fluffier and creamier, and it melted straight into my skin. After using it as my daily moisturiser for four weeks, I noticed my skin looked more hydrated, plumper and generally more radiant—and I even had a few people at the gym comment on how good my skin looked.”—Gill Cohen, Glamour contributor

|---|---|
| Convenient hygienic packaging | Some users with oily skin find it too heavy |
| Lightweight yet nourishing formula | |
| Fragrance-free |
Occlusive skin firming moisturizers can be a minefield for those with reactive skin. They either might break you out, or wind up with your skin feeling somehow drier or more irritated. Drunk Elephant’s Protini Polypeptide Cream is a lightweight, gel-like moisturizer that melts into skin while helping maintain hydration—key in supporting firmness and elasticity. The consistency is light and whipped, and skin absorbs it fast without pilling or leaving you feeling greased up. It’s packed with peptides to lock in moisture, pygmy waterlily stem cell extract for antioxidants, and soybean folic acid ferment extract to improve elasticity and texture. This uncommon combo leaves skin plump, smooth, and lifted.
“The Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide moisturizer has been my ride-or-die for years, and with good reason. I find that it’s a great daytime formula for lasting yet lightweight hydration that delivers the most stunning glow from within, making it a superb base for makeup, Within my first month of using it, I already noticed a sizable improvement to my skin’s firmness and texture, and the reduced look of fine lines. Since I started using it, I’ve already emptied five tubs, and I can’t imagine my morning routine without it.”—Denise Primbet, Glamour contributor

Best for Dry Skin: Centellian 24 Madeca Cream Time Reverse
| What we love: | What could improve: |
|---|---|
| The texture is thick and creamy | It’s a bit occlusive so isn’t the best match for oily skin types |
| Makes skin feel soft and plush almost instantly |
Highly praised by Ethan Wonuk Hwang, MD, a cosmetic physician at Cheongdam LeBelle Dermatologic Clinic in Seoul, this barrier-supporting cream is one to try if you have very dry skin or are prone to redness. “What I appreciate most about this formulation is its focus on maintaining skin health rather than relying on potentially irritating levels of active ingredients. The combination of moisturizing agents and Centella-derived compounds can help support barrier recovery and reduce low-grade inflammation, which is increasingly recognized as a contributor to skin aging,” he says. After incorporating this into your routine one to two times daily, you’ll start to notice more resilience and bounce in your skin’s texture. Pro tip: pair it before and after applying retinol to avoid irritation if you’re extra-sensitive.
“This is the kind of cushiony, balm-like moisturizer my dry skin just drinks up. I have the most visible lines on my neck, which I usually treat with periodic PDRN and skin-booster injections. Between sessions I like to use a rich cream like this one to temporarily ‘plump’ them up and keep them hydrated. I’ve been using this as my evening moisturizer since it feels a bit too nourishing for daytime use, but when I slather it on before sleeping, I wake up to the most refreshed, bouncy, healthy-looking glow.” —Sarah Y. Wu, Glamour contributor

| A little goes a long way | |
| Not too greasy for oily skin | |
| Fragrance-free |
This creamy moisturizer combines peptides, retinol, and ceramides to hydrate deeply while firming and smoothing skin. Its lightweight texture delivers a glowing finish that targets dryness without feeling heavy, making it ideal for areas prone to rough patches and even flakiness. We recommend this as a great retinol alternative for those who have particularly dry skin or sensitive areas that may be prone to redness after using a vitamin A derivative—it’s a lot gentler, easier to apply (the texture is smooth and silky) and doesn’t make skin feel stripped.
Glamour’s Kilkeary says:
“I tend to have dry patches around my eyebrow area and sometimes on my cheeks, and this cream works wonders to smooth them out and give me a subtle glow. While I also do have oily spots (particularly on my T-zone and around my nose), I find that this gives me just the right amount of hydration in those areas without making them look greasy. This cream is fragrance-free as well, and my skin soaks it up, even on days when it’s feeling extra sensitive or irritated, making it a great alternative if I want to take a mini retinol break. Overall, a 10/10 in my book!”—A.M.K

Sagging skin around the neck, jowls, or eyes will appreciate a firming cream that features a triple whammy of peptides, antioxidants, and vitamins. This cream helps protect your complexion from UV, pollution, and other environmental factors that may make loose skin look more noticeable. TIt features a blend of all three, including a thermos thermophilous (a type of deep sea bacteria) ferment that nourishes and defends skin, plus red algae to strengthen the barrier. Combined, these ingredients help address sagging areas and give you a tighter, taut finish.

The face-firming creams we tried but didn’t include
- Another firming cream we loved was the SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Interrupter Advanced Cream which we liked for mature skin types. This rich cream is designed to improve firmness and combat sagging in mature skin. Its blend of peptides, proxylane, and blueberry extract hydrates deeply, smooths texture, and supports a lifted, tighter-looking appearance—especially when paired with the brand’s A.G.E. serum. While we like the formula generally, we removed it from the list because it’s very expensive and quite sticky after application.
- We also tried the Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream for a non-comedogenic formula packed with peptides to give you a smooth, firm finish. It’s especially great for those with dry or sensitive skin, since it offers noticeable bounce and firmness without the irritation of a retinoid. We ultimately removed it from the list because it’s a bit greasy which might not be ideal for oily skin types.
- The SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator adds moisture but also supports the skin’s natural ability to produce its own hyaluronic acid—key for maintaining elasticity and a firmer appearance. While we like how it plumped our skin, it’s more of a hyaluronic acid serum instead of a face-firming cream.
Frequently asked questions
Does facial firming cream really work?
Facial firming creams really do work, thanks to ingredients like peptides, retinoids, and humectants. Peptides “can nudge your skin to make more collagen over time,” says Mollie Kelly Tufman, MD, and founder of the Beauty Lab. While retinoids remain the MVPs for thickening the dermis and boosting elasticity. “Also, don’t underestimate humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. They pull in water and give your skin that juicy, plumped-up look, sort of like inflating a balloon just enough to smooth out the wrinkles.”
While creams can’t reach as deep as in-office treatments like microneedling or radiofrequency, they’re still essential for keeping skin hydrated, plump, and resilient over time.
What causes sagging skin?
According to Kseniya Kobets, MD, director of cosmetic dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care, sagging skin is due to a loss of collagen and elastin. “When underlying fat shrinks or shifts, supporting ligaments loosen, and bone changes, so the skin sits over a different foundation,” she says. There are a ton of reasons why this happens—Dr. Kobets says it likely has to do with genetics, sun exposure, smoking and hormonal or weight loss changes.
What’s the fastest way to tighten sagging face skin?
Moisturizing gives the quickest temporary improvement when dehydration is the issue, Dr. Kobets adds. “True skin tightening generally develops over weeks to months with in-office procedures,” she says. It’s important to determine what’s causing your skin sagging when determining how to address it: dehydration, laxity, volume loss or a combination of all might require a variety of over-the-counter and in-office solutions.
What do dermatologists recommend for sagging skin?
In addition to using a facial firming cream, Dr. Kobets says applying sunscreen, a retinol, and vitamin C and peptides can make all the difference. “Beyond skincare, we may consider fillers and collagen-stimulating volumizers for volume loss, lasers—including resurfacing lasers—for skin quality, microneedling or radiofrequency microneedling, and ultrasound or radiofrequency tightening devices for appropriate laxity,” she adds.
How we evaluated the best face firming creams
Testers applied the creams consistently—morning or night, depending on the product—for several weeks, paying attention to hydration, skin texture, firmness, and overall appearance of fine lines and sagging. The ones we tested featured ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide and retinol to soften skin texture and plump and add glow to skin. We also considered factors like absorption, layering with other skin care or makeup, and scent. The best skin firming creams struck the balance between hydration and making our skin look bouncy and texture-free, without freezing our face.
