A hacker's laundering trail, a whale's record outflow and Arthur Hayes' fund sale all firmed up today, and together they say more about ETH than any single update does.
A hacker's laundering trail, a whale's record outflow and Arthur Hayes' fund sale all firmed up today, and together they say more about ETH than any single update does.
The Bitget Hacker Figure Firmed From Rumour to a Tracked Number
When this newsroom first flagged the Bitget exploit's aftermath, the scale of what the hacker was moving was not settled. The update since narrows it: Arkham Intelligence has now attached a specific figure, $19.48 million moved by Bitget hacker across 52 transfers, Arkham says, carried by three independent publishers including Finbold, The Cryptonomist EN and crypto.news. That is a meaningful firming, since a number repeated by three separately bylined outlets is harder to dismiss as a single tracker's guess. What has not firmed is the claim, mentioned alongside it, that this batch is only the opening stage of a larger laundering effort tied to the original exploit figure, and that part remains unconfirmed rather than false.
The distinction matters for how much weight the $19.48 million should carry. It is a documented movement, not a documented total loss, and treating it as the latter would be reading further into the evidence than the evidence supports. What the update does establish is motion and method, 52 transfers is a laundering pattern, not a lump sum, and that pattern is the part worth holding onto rather than the headline figure itself.
A Four-Month Outflow Record Gained a Second, Older Data Point
The original report here was straightforward on-chain accounting, large Ethereum holders sent 169,770 ETH to exchanges, the highest such outflow in four months, sourced to crypto.news and corroborated across four publishers in total, including AMBCrypto, Bitcoin.com News and CryptoSlate. That breadth, four independent outlets on the same figure, puts it among the better-supported numbers in today's reporting. The update since does not revise the 169,770 figure itself. It adds texture: Bitcoin.com News separately reported a wallet that acquired 100,000 ETH at $0.31 per coin moved $2.4 million of that holding to Kraken.
Read on its own, the wallet detail is colour. Read against the four-month outflow record, it is corroborating context, a early holder realising gains sits inside, not apart from, a broader pattern of large holders choosing exchanges now. Neither report claims to explain why holders are selling as a group, and this edition is not going to supply that explanation either. What changed between the first file and this one is specificity, not direction.
Maelstrom's Exit Size Held Steady While Attribution Tightened
Arthur Hayes, through his investment vehicle Maelstrom, has sold off roughly $22 million worth of Ethereum, Ethena and Uniswap tokens, a figure that has not moved since it was first flagged by on-chain trackers. What changed in the time since publication is reach rather than number, the report is now carried by five named outlets, CoinGape, Coinfomania, Cryptopolitan, TronWeekly and crypto.news, across six feeds, up from the three-publisher threshold this newsroom treats as baseline corroboration. Hayes has not publicly detailed the full reasoning behind the exit, and that gap has not closed with the extra pickup. More outlets repeating the same unexplained sale is wider confirmation of the fact, not an explanation of the motive.
Put next to the whale outflow and the Bitget laundering trail, the Maelstrom exit completes a pattern worth naming plainly: three separate reports, from three separate sourcing chains, all describe Ethereum-denominated assets moving toward exchanges or away from their original holders on the same day. None of the three stories claims the others exist. Reading them together is the newsroom's job, not the trackers'.
Nothing in these three updates establishes a single cause for Ethereum's selling pressure, only that it is multi-sourced, documented by name across hacker funds, whale wallets and a known investment vehicle, and that the whale outflow figure, carried by four independent publishers, is the one with the firmest ground under it.
