NEW YORK — Almost two weeks after the Yankees’ latest postseason failure, the suspense is over.
Aaron Boone will be back as manager.
There’s been a lot of speculation that the Yankees would move on from Boone, who has one year left on his three-year contract, but general manager Brian Cashman will not be making a change, according to reports.
Boone has been one of the most successful regular season managers in major league history, but he has a losing record in the playoffs and guided the Yankees to just one pennant in nine years.
The Yankees have not won a world championship since 2009. The streak climbed to 17 years on Oct. 7 when the Tampa Bay Rays swept the Yankees in a best-of-five American League Division Series.
The Yankees’ 93-68 record this season was the second best in the league, but they finished second in the AL East to the Rays by five games while playing most of the year without Giancarlo Stanton and more than half without Aaron Judge, their three-time MVP.
Boone has been under a lot of public scrutiny the last two weeks with legions of Yankee fans on social media and former players criticizing clubhouse culture. The critics have included Derek Jeter, CC Sabathia, Joe Girardi, and Paul O’Neill.
Judge, who has been a long-time Boone strong supporter, stuck up for his manager the night the Yankees were eliminated.
“He’s our manager,” Judge said. “He’s running this ship. He puts us in the right position to go out there and succeed, especially a season like this where I’m banged up missing 100 games. You miss Big G. You miss a lot of guys.
“For him to manage it the way he did and put us in the best position to get into the postseason and get an opportunity to win a World Series, he’s definitely had our back and is our guy.”
