Chiefs make Travis Kelce decision after three straight limited practices ahead of game against the Seahawks

The Kansas City Chiefs received encouraging news on Travis Kelce ahead of their much anticipated Sunday night matchup against the defending champions Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field, as the veteran tight end was not assigned a game status on the team’s final injury report.

Kelce had been listed as a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday because of an ankle injury, raising questions about his availability for the Week 7 contest. His omission from the final report designation suggests Kansas City expects him to play, although the Chiefs have not formally guaranteed his availability.

The development would be a significant boost for quarterback Patrick Mahomes and an offense that will be without wide receiver Rashee Rice and offensive lineman Jaylon Moore. Kansas City is coming off a 22-6 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers and will look to maintain its strong start when it travels to Seattle for Sunday Night Football.

Kelce remains a key piece of the Chiefs offense

At 36, Kelce is in his 14th NFL season after considering retirement during the offseason before deciding to return to Kansas City on a new contract. The decision has paid dividends early in the 2026 campaign. Through five games, Kelce has recorded 20 receptions for a team-high 299 yards and two touchdowns. His 196 yards after the catch rank among the NFL’s best, underscoring his continued ability to create opportunities after securing the ball.

Kelce’s production remains particularly important as the Chiefs navigate injuries elsewhere on offense. His chemistry with Mahomes and experience in high-pressure situations make him one of the quarterback’s most dependable options, especially in crucial passing situations.

The ankle issue was Kelce’s first appearance onKansas City’s injury report this season. Although three consecutive limited practices prompted concern, the absence of a game designation is a positive sign heading into the weekend..

Chiefs will be without Rashee Rice

Even if Kelce is available, Kansas City will have to make adjustments against Seattle. Rice has been ruled out with hamstring and knee injuries, removing another important receiving option from the lineup. Offensive lineman Jaylon Moore will also miss the game because of a concussion.

Those absences could increase the responsibility placed on Kelce and the Chiefs’ remaining pass catchers as Mahomes looks to keep the offense productive against the Seahawks. Seattle, led by quarterback Sam Darnold, presents another test for Kansas City as the Chiefs pursue another victory. Kelce’s availability would give Mahomes a familiar target capable of working the middle of the field and turning short receptions into substantial gains.

Denver awaits in Week 8

The Seahawks game also precedes an important AFC West matchupagainst the Denver Broncos in Week 8. With the division rivalry looming, Kansas City will want to avoid unnecessary setbacks while managing the health of its veteran players.

For now, Kelce’s status points toward a return to the field Sunday night. After three limited practices, the Chiefs appear positioned to have their leading receiver available against Seattle, provided there is no late change in his condition. Kansas City and Seattle are scheduled to kick off Sunday at 8:20 p.m. ET
