Part of the ceiling at Palma Airport has collapsed following heavy rain caused by storm Adam that has affected Mallorca in recent days. Aena confirmed that sections of the plasterboard ceiling had fallen in a corridor serving an office and storage area. Water had also leaked into the building.
Acciona, the company carrying out renovation works at the airport, has removed the damaged plasterboard and is repairing the joint responsible for the leak. Aena said the affected area had been cordoned off until the work was completed for safety reasons.
Airport workers said that they were concerned about the incident, stressing that it was not the first time rainfall had caused similar damage. They also warned of the potential risk to non-EU passengers using the nearby Tax Free office to claim VAT refunds on their purchases.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of the airport while renovation works continue. Workers and passengers fear that repeated problems caused by heavy rain could eventually lead to a more serious accident.
