Guwahati, Oct 12: A suspected job racket involving middlemen, promises of employment and alleged illegal entry into India has come under scrutiny after 12 Bangladeshi nationals, including three children, were apprehended in Assam’s Goalpara district.
The case has raised questions about how the group was allegedly brought into India through Meghalaya, transported to Guwahati and subsequently abandoned, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma suspecting links to human trafficking and illegal migration.
According to details shared by Sarma on social media, the group comprised nine adults and three children. They were reportedly brought into India through Jaflong in Meghalaya on October 5 by a broker identified as Sabor.
The group was subsequently taken to Guwahati by a Khasi man accompanying the broker and allegedly kept there for three days, the Chief Minister said.
The broker allegedly fled from the vicinity of Guwahati railway station after taking 7,000 Bangladeshi taka and a mobile phone from the group.
Investigators are also looking into the alleged promise of employment that brought the group to India. Sarma said the broker had shown them video calls featuring other Bangladeshi nationals purportedly working at a company in Guwahati and assured them of jobs.
An arrangement had allegedly been made for the company owner to pay Rs 20,000 for each of the nine adults, with the amount to be adjusted against their wages, according to the Chief Minister.
The circumstances surrounding the group’s journey, the role of the alleged intermediaries and the nature of the proposed employment are central to establishing whether the case involves human trafficking, illegal migration or other offences.
The presence of three children among those apprehended also adds another dimension to the investigation, although their circumstances and relationship to the adults have not been established in the information made public so far.
The group was reportedly spotted by a local resident on Friday night, prompting their apprehension. Further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of their entry into India and determine whether others were involved in the alleged operation.
The suspected trafficking angle remains under investigation, and the allegations against the intermediaries have yet to be independently established.
