BLACKPINK star Jennie has revealed that she never recorded “Handlebars” in the same studio as Dua Lipa. The singers collaborated on the track for Jennie’s debut solo album, Ruby. During a conversation with Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker for Rolling Stone’s “Musicians on Musicians” feature, Jennie shared details about their working relationship. She described the experience as more like spending time with a friend than making music.
Jennie recalled that meeting Dua in New York felt like a casual day out together. The singers exchanged text messages as they tried to arrange a date to hang out. However, their busy schedules meant they could not record their vocals together. Dua later sent her vocals for the track, which Jennie praised as amazing.

“Handlebars” features on Ruby, which arrived on March 7, 2025. The album marked an important step in Jennie’s solo career beyond her work with BLACKPINK. The song later received a single release and a music video around March 10–11, 2025. It also went to US radio on March 11.
Although “Handlebars” marked their first collaboration as a duo, Jennie and Dua already shared a musical connection. Dua previously teamed up with BLACKPINK on “Kiss and Make Up” in 2018. That collaboration introduced her to the group’s musical world years before she worked directly with Jennie. Their latest partnership brought the artists together in a new way, even without a shared recording session.
