- Former England lock David Ribbans will complete his three-year international stand-down period on 27 October, opening the door to a Springboks switch
- Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus confirmed Ribbans is among the players on his radar ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup
- Ribbans, who won 11 caps for England, previously admitted he finds it strange when players represent two different countries
Former England lock David Ribbans is just 11 days away from becoming eligible to represent South Africa, with the milestone date of 27 October set to open the door to a potential Springboks switch.
The 31-year-old, currently playing for Toulon in France, last pulled on an England jersey during the bronze-medal match against Argentina at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. That appearance marked the end of an international career that spanned 11 caps with England. Born in Somerset West, South Africa, Ribbans would be eligible to represent his country of birth once his three-year international stand-down period concludes, subject to approval under World Rugby's eligibility regulations.
Erasmus has Ribbans on his radar
Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus has made no secret of his awareness of the towering lock's situation.
"We are also looking at someone like David Ribbans, not that they must get their hopes up," Erasmus said, signalling genuine but measured interest as South Africa builds its squad ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
The former Northampton Saints forward has drawn attention as one of several ex-England internationals who could theoretically switch allegiances before the next tournament.
Ribbans leaves door open but voices reservations
Whether Erasmus's interest translates into a call-up may depend less on the coach's intentions and more on the player's own convictions. Speaking to The Telegraph in April 2025, Ribbans acknowledged the possibility without fully embracing it.
"You never say never with these things and South Africa was my home originally, but England has become my second home and I was super proud to play for them," he said.
However, Ribbans outlined a personal principle that could complicate any approach.
"I find it a bit strange when players play for two countries," he admitted, adding: "This is no slight on the Springboks, who are an amazing team. It's just my view and I'm a bit stubborn in it. I'd put aside the potential glory for that because it wouldn't be right towards England."
Those sentiments suggest that Erasmus may face a challenge convincing Ribbans to make the switch, regardless of what the eligibility window allows from 27 October onwards.
