Municipalities representing all four potential sites for Czechia’s deep geological nuclear waste repository have complained to the European Commission over an alleged breach of EU environmental assessment rules. They oppose the Environment Ministry’s decision to waive a detailed strategic environmental assessment of the updated national radioactive waste policy. They argue that planned nuclear expansion will substantially increase waste volumes and require greater storage capacity. The ministry says the changes are general and environmental impacts will be assessed once a site and technical details are known. The repository is due to open by 2050, with a location selected by 2030.
