Volvo built its reputation on cars that keep you safe while you do the driving. Now it wants the car to do more of the driving too.
The Chinese-owned, Swedish-designed automaker said Thursday it plans to launch hands-free, point-to-point driving by 2030, built on Nvidia’s autonomous driving technology. The system is meant to compete directly with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised), the feature that has defined the consumer driver-assist conversation for years.
What Volvo is actually promising
Volvo describes the new system as Level 2++. That label sits in the awkward middle of the industry’s automation scale.
Think of it as a very capable co-pilot that still expects you to stay alert. The car does the steering, braking and navigating, but a human remains responsible for what happens.
According to Volvo, the system will be able to handle complex urban environments. That includes traffic lights, stop signs and unprotected left turns, all without explicit input from the driver.
The “point-to-point” part means the car is designed to manage a trip from origin to destination, not just a stretch of highway. Most current hands-free systems are limited to mapped highways, where lanes are clear and cyclists are rare.
Volvo will power the feature with Nvidia’s autonomous driving stack. Put simply, Nvidia supplies much of the brainpower and software foundation, while Volvo shapes how it behaves inside its own vehicles.
The hardware under the hood
This is not a brand-new relationship. Volvo and Nvidia have been working together on driver assistance for some time, starting with the EX90 SUV.
The EX90 uses Nvidia’s DRIVE Orin system-on-chip, which delivers more than 250 TOPS of processing power. TOPS stands for tera operations per second, a measure of how many calculations a chip can perform. More TOPS generally means the car can process more sensor data and run heavier AI models in real time.
Volvo has positioned the EX90 to offer hands-free Level 3 capability through over-the-air software updates. Level 3 is a step beyond Level 2++, since it can allow drivers to take their attention off the road in specific conditions.
Looking further out, future Volvo models are set to move to Nvidia’s DRIVE Thor chip by the end of the decade. Thor can reach up to 1,000 TOPS, roughly four times the headroom of Orin.
Volvo is also drawing on its own engineering. Its Zenseact subsidiary works on the software side, while Nvidia’s cloud AI infrastructure is used to train the models. The goal is a feedback loop where data from the road improves the system over time.
A crowded lane
Volvo is entering a field that already has some well-known occupants. Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) is the obvious comparison, and the name itself has drawn plenty of debate about what “full” really means when supervision is required.
The more pointed comparison may be Mercedes-Benz. The German automaker recently rolled out an Nvidia-powered system in its CLA sedan that uses Nvidia’s DRIVE AV stack. It enables Level 2++ point-to-point urban navigation with hands-free capability.
Volvo’s broader plan involves what it calls a unified “Superset” tech stack across its future electric vehicles. The idea is to build one scalable software and hardware platform and deploy it across models, rather than reinventing the system for each car.
What this means
The most immediate takeaway is that Nvidia’s grip on the automotive AI market keeps tightening. With Volvo and Mercedes both relying on its stack for urban hands-free driving, the chipmaker is becoming something close to default infrastructure for automakers that do not build their own full self-driving stack.
That creates a strategic split in the industry. Tesla develops its system in-house, while a growing group of legacy automakers is outsourcing the core technology to a common supplier.
The 2030 target also deserves context. Recent coverage does not confirm any new announcement from Volvo regarding the 2030 launch date, indicating a cautious approach toward regulatory and safety considerations. Rules governing hands-free driving vary by region, and they will shape where and how a Level 2++ city system can actually be switched on.
For investors watching the sector, the developments to track are fairly concrete. Watch whether the EX90’s promised Level 3 capability arrives through over-the-air updates on schedule, since that will be an early test of Volvo’s software execution. Watch the transition to DRIVE Thor in future models. And watch how Mercedes’ CLA system performs in the real world, because it is the closest preview of what Volvo’s version might look like.
