The Washington Commanders left everyone in shock on Sunday, October 11, after the team ran the clock instead of going for a field goal in the game’s final moments, resulting in a tie against the New York Giants.
Now, ESPN analysts believe heads should roll after the brutal overtime disaster.
“We don’t know when it’ll be, but I would imagine in time there’s going to be consequences from this game,” ESPN’s Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter predicted on the Monday, October 12 episode of the network’s Get Up broadcast, after comparing the gaffe by coach Dan Quinn to the so-called “Miracle at the Meadowlands” that cost the Giants the 1978 Super Bowl win and, subsequently, coach Bob Gibson his job.

Appearing on the same show, former Head Coach for the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills Rex Ryan was even more outraged by quarterback Jayden Daniels‘ play — calling it, “the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”
“This has never happened, there’s no chance in hell this has ever happened, and it won’t happen again. Our lifetime, our kids’ lifetime, their kids’ lifetime. This is atrocious!” he exclaimed, before putting the blame on Quinn, 56.
“We get it, Dan Quinn, good guy, he’ll never talk to me again but I tell the truth,” Ryan, 63, said, first calling out the coach for blowing the Atlanta Falcons’ lead over the New England Patriots during Super Bowl LI.
“How about we own this one too? This stuff right here gets you fired,” Ryan continued. “Unfortunately. And Dan’s a great guy, but not for long when you manage games like this. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Quinn did take ownership of the botched play while speaking with press after the game, per Yahoo! Sports.
“The sequencing of that does not fall on [Daniels]. It’s an outside throw or a clock. Those are the two, an out-of-bounds throw or a clock. That has to come from me,” he said. “I don’t have to put him into that spot. I can do that earlier. We can finish the kick earlier, we don’t need to gain more yards. So that’s on me.”
“Leaving tonight with a tie feels like a loss. The last sequence — we throw it out of bounds, we clock it, you give yourself a chance to kick it. We pride ourselves on those moments at the end of the game,” he added. “After the first-down run, still trying to gain more for the kick. Right call is obviously, we can go clock it early. Don’t put ourselves in that spot, and that’s my responsibility, no one else’s.”
Responding to a similar line of questioning post-game, Daniels simply added, “We’ve just gotta be better.”
“We’ve got to stop the clock. We’ve got to know the situation. We’ve got to relay that as an offense,” he added. “It starts with everybody, top down. Ultimately, it’s on me.”
