Mairang, Oct 15: The second edition of the Markham Festival will be held on October 16 and 17 at Markham Valley in Meghalaya’s Eastern West Khasi Hills district, showcasing the region’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and tourism potential.
The festival is being organised by the Eastern West Khasi Hills district administration in collaboration with Meghalaya Tourism.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is supposed to attend the event as the chief guest, while Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira will be the guest of honour. Senior government officials, traditional leaders and other invitees are also expected to attend.
The two-day festival will feature live music, cultural performances and local food stalls. Heavy metal band MAIAN is among the musical acts scheduled to perform.
Located in the Mawthadraishan region, around 60 km from Shillong, Markham Valley is known for its rolling grasslands, expansive meadows and panoramic highland views. The valley is often described as Meghalaya’s “Mini Dzukou” for its open landscapes and seasonal wildflowers. Its early-morning views of clouds drifting across the hills are among its key attractions.
Accessible via Mairang along the Shillong–Nongstoin highway, the destination is also close to Markham Village and Dommurok View Point.
The festival aims to promote lesser-known destinations in Meghalaya and expand tourism beyond established hubs such as Shillong and Sohra. It also seeks to create livelihood opportunities for local communities through eco-tourism, homestays and cultural tourism.
