The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has taken note of reports circulating on some media platforms alleging that the Department has lost access to the National ID Card data.
It is understood that such a report emanated from a court proceeding where a member of staff of GID was misunderstood when he responded to questions surrounding ID Card verification.
For clarity, the public is informed that the ID Card servers at the time of the SEMLEX contract remain in the country and that the data is accessible.
The Gambia Immigration Department reassures the public of its continued compliance with the “Access to Information Act, 2021”. On numerous occasions, the department said it has responded administratively to various national and international requests for verification of legal Gambian identity documents, including Biometric and Machine-Readable Passports.
The Department urges the public to engage with the appropriate authorities to ensure public communication is accurate, balanced and informed by relevant verifiable facts. Unfounded claims on matters of this nature can undermine public confidence and create unnecessary concern about the protection and management of critical national data.
The Gambia Immigration Department remains committed to safeguarding the legal identity of Gambians and foreign nationals within its mandate and protecting the integrity of national identity records. The Department will continue to discharge its responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws, relevant government policies and its institutional mandate.
