Texas A&M's defense gave the Aggies plenty of chances to pull off the upset against Missouri on Saturday afternoon, but due to starting quarterback Marcel Reed's continued failure to operate first-year OC Holmon Wiggins' scheme, six points, both from kicker David Olano field goals, were all A&M could muster, losing 27-6.
Sitting at 3-3 and 1-3 in SEC play, Texas A&M's offense has too many problems, now including an offensive line that looked improved before Saturday's game, as third-year coach Mike Elko will continue to stick with Marcel Reed no matter how poorly he has played, likely due to backup quarterback Brady Hart and freshman Helaman Casuga not being ready to play.
However, the numbers, which are as bad as you think, tell the full story: Texas A&M's offense is one of the worst units in the country, as AggieYell writer Carter Karels provided twelve key offensive categories where the Aggies are ranked 100th or worse, including total offense (113th), while Marcel Reed, who has thrown for 1,097 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions, is completing 55.3% of his passes, ranked 126th nationally.
Again, the Texas A&M defense has had its issues, but they're nowhere near as problematic, putting pressure on Mike Elko and Holmon Wiggins to make whatever changes they need to be competitive in the five remaining SEC matchups.
This starts in the trenches, with blocking issues and a need to re-establish the run game, since it's hard to see a world where Marcel Reed drastically improves as a passer mid-season.
