KUALA TERENGGANU: A 63-year-old housewife lost RM87,975.04 after being duped by a non-existent online investment scheme.
Kuala Terengganu police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the victim came across a stock investment advertisement on Facebook on Oct 3.
He said the woman was attracted to the scheme and contacted a male suspect via WhatsApp to inquire further.
"The suspect persuaded the victim to join the scheme by promising lucrative returns of RM25,000 for every RM450 invested.
"Lured by the prospect of high returns, the victim made nine transactions totalling RM87,975.04 using her savings and money obtained by pawning her jewellery between Oct 3 and Oct 12," he said in a statement today.
Azli said the victim realised she had been cheated after failing to recover her initial capital or receive the promised profits, while attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful.
"The victim, who is from Wakaf Tembusu in Kuala Nerus, lodged a police report at 7.58pm yesterday," he said.
