- Grenada All-Comers Championship scheduled for 26-27 June 2027
- Many of Grenada’s NCAA-based athletes have found limited opportunities to compete at home
- Goal is to create a competition that brings together the country’s top athletic talent
The Grenada Athletic Association (GAA) will introduce a new Grenada All-Comers Championship in June 2027, creating an additional competition opportunity for local and overseas-based athletes while generating discussion about the future structure of the national track and field calendar.
Scheduled for 26-27 June 2027, the meet is being positioned as a key competition within the regional athletics season, providing athletes with an opportunity to compete for qualification standards ahead of major international championships, including the Pan American Games and the World Athletics Championships.
A major factor behind the event’s introduction is the growing number of Grenadian athletes competing in the United States collegiate system. In recent years, many of Grenada’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)-based athletes have had limited opportunities to compete at home after their collegiate seasons end. By placing the event in late June, the GAA hopes to attract a wider cross-section of Grenadian athletes, including collegiate competitors, national team members and locally based athletes.
Explaining the vision behind the initiative, GAA officials said the goal is to create a competition that brings together the country’s top athletic talent. “We saw the need to have an event where we can attract all of our athletes. The college season will be over by then, and we’re hoping to attract as many as possible. Even if we don’t get everyone right away, we are going to start, and eventually that meet will grow into something really big.”
Officials believe the meet could become an important fixture on the local athletics calendar while giving athletes another chance to perform before a home crowd.
While enthusiasm has surrounded the introduction of the new meet, discussion has also emerged about its place within Grenada’s championship structure. The GAA has confirmed that the traditional March championships will retain their status as Grenada’s official National Championships, while the All-Comers Championship will function as an open competition designed to attract broad participation and provide additional competitive opportunities.
Some stakeholders within the athletics community have suggested that the June event could eventually serve as Grenada’s premier senior championship meet, given its timing and its potential to attract a larger field of overseas-based athletes. However, the association has indicated that, for now, the existing championship framework will remain in place.
Further details, including registration procedures, event schedules, and technical requirements, are expected as the 2027 season approaches.
The Grenada All-Comers Championship represents one of the most significant additions to the local athletics calendar in recent years. If successful, the meet could become a major showcase for Grenadian talent, bringing together athletes from across the tri-island state and the diaspora while strengthening the pathway to regional and international competition.
