South African music and theatre icon David Kramer is grieving the sudden loss of his wife, Renaye Kramer, who passed away on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. The celebrated singer-songwriter broke the news in a heartfelt statement posted to his official Instagram page on Wednesday afternoon.
"It is with a broken heart that I share the news that my beloved wife, Renaye and mother to our daughters Jesse and Amy, passed away unexpectedly yesterday, 13 October," he wrote, without disclosing the circumstances surrounding her death.
Kramer asked the public to respect the family's privacy during this painful period and said that details regarding a celebration of Renaye's life would be shared in due course.
A love rooted in Worcester
The couple's bond went far deeper than marriage. Renaye and David Kramer's connection stretched back to their childhoods in Worcester in the Western Cape, long before he became one of South Africa's most recognisable performers. Over the decades, Renaye remained closely tied to his creative world, contributing to productions linked to the Kramer-Petersen Songbook and the musical Ver in die Wêreld Kittie.
The musician celebrated his 75th birthday on 27 June, describing the milestone as "extraordinary" as he once doubted he would see the day due to his declining health.
"These days my body is not always cooperative. I live with sarcoidosis and a fractured vertebra caused by osteoporosis, and there are moments when the journey feels slower and more challenging than before, but my mind remains full of ideas, and for that I am deeply grateful."
He reflected on his decades-long career, work in the arts and worldly travels, crediting his wife and daughters for their support.
"I could never have travelled this road alone. I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to my wife, Renaye, and to my daughters, Jesse and Amy, whose love, patience and support have sustained me through every triumph, disappointment, opening night and new beginning."
Four decades of South African cultural legacy
David Kramer has built a career spanning more than 40 years in South African music and theatre, celebrated for his Afrikaans songs, stage productions, and his trademark red veldskoen shoes. He is also widely remembered for his iconic Volkswagen Microbus adverts.
His most enduring creative partnership was with the late Taliep Petersen, with whom he crafted landmark productions including District Six: The Musical and Kat and the Kings. Those works brought the stories of Cape Town's communities, culture, and history to audiences both locally and abroad.
In January 2026, two decades after Petersen's murder, the City of Cape Town honoured both men with the Freedom of the City for their lasting contribution to Cape Town's cultural heritage. Kramer received the award in person at Cape Town City Hall, while Petersen's family accepted the posthumous recognition on his behalf.
Renaye's passing comes only months after that milestone moment of recognition for her husband.
