This college football season certainly hasn't gone as planned for Penn State, which is currently one of the worst Power Four teams in the country.
Penn State, 3-4 on the season and 0-4 in the Big Ten, wasn't expected to play at this type of level.
There were certainly hopes that Penn State would be an incredible team this year, one that even had a chance to make the College Football Playoff because of its easy schedule.
Unfortunately, as has been said too many times in recent years, Penn State just hasn't been able to do enough on either side of the ball. Once again, the offense has been a big part of that problem.
Head coach Matt Campbell has been very loyal to some of his guys, and unfortunately, it's become a problem.
Campbell brought in a lot of his former Iowa State players, and as I said during the offseason, my biggest worry was that some of them wouldn't be good enough to play in the Big Ten.
It's always tough to say that during the offseason, since we have to see guys do it in games, but the reality is that Penn State doesn't have guys good enough to play in the Big Ten, and that includes quarterback Rocco Becht. Becht was expected to be a big piece of this team, but he hasn't done anything at the level anybody was expecting.
It seems like an obvious decision to bench him, but Campbell recently said there's no intention of sitting him just yet.
"We have complete faith in Rocco Becht," Campbell said, per Mark Wogenrich.
"Rocco has continued to obviously play good football, and there’s times and there’s a couple moments that he would love to have back. That’s part of the game. Right now, we’re at a point where our margin of error is really thin, and from a coordinator standpoint, from a head coach standpoint, from a player standpoint, that razor-thin margin is what you’re really putting all your time and effort into making sure we fill that gap.
"From Alex’s standpoint, we have great belief that he’s going to have a bright future. His time will come, and when that time comes, we’ll be excited for that opportunity. But obviously that time is not right now."
With Campbell and Becht together for the past five seasons, it's not much of a surprise that he has no plans to bench him.
The bigger problem here is that Campbell doesn't seem willing to make a decision that would obviously benefit his team. Perhaps others behind him aren't ready, but many Penn State fans are ready to watch guys like Alex Manske.
