A preliminary Israeli military investigation found that Monday’s deadly explosion near the Lebanese border was likely caused by a Hezbollah cluster bomb left over from past fighting, according to a military statement.
The blast on Ramim Ridge in the Naftali Mountains of northeastern Israel killed a 15-year-old and wounded at least 24 others on a school hiking trip, Israeli media reported.
Israel’s Channel 12 News reported that one of the students is believed to have picked up the bomb and placed it in his bag.
Following the incident, Israeli Education Minister Yoav Kisch ordered a two-day suspension of school trips in the area to assess student safety. ■
