Don't feel bad if you prematurely thought the Milwaukee Brewers won their first World Series game in 44 years.
Both Jacob Misiorowski and Christian Yelich assumed the same. As did the second base umpire, Fox Sports play-by-play broadcaster Joe Davis, and apparently whoever controls the post-win fireworks. Probably everyone tuned into the broadcast did, too.
They all assumed shortstop Cooper Pratt caught the ball with his foot still on second base and he turned a double-play to secure a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays and take a 1-0 series lead.
They were all wrong. So don't beat yourself up if you were, too.
It took a challenge from Rays manager Kevin Cash and a replay review to make that clear. But, it was. With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Tampa Bay mounting a comeback and Milwaukee closer Trevor Megill under pressure to secure a victory, what appeared at first glance to be a game-winning double play was not.
As Rays star Junior Caminero ran towards second base, Brewers second baseman Brice Turang threw to Pratt. Pratt stood on the bag when the throw left Turang's hand, but took it off too early and Caminero was safe at second.
Was Cooper Pratt's foot off the bag on this potential game-ending double play? https://t.co/8JpspjM3HY
