Several NSUI workers were detained by police early on Friday, after staging a protest outside the Parliament Street Police Station, amid heightened security in the national capital ahead of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) ‘Lehra do Tiranga’ march at Connaught Place.
The protest came as the Delhi Police stepped up security around Central Park, where CJP chief Abhijeet Dipke had called on supporters to gather at 5 pm on October 16 and wave the national flag.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) announced that Central Park would remain closed to the public on October 16 and 17, citing administrative reasons.
The closure followed a request to the Delhi Police to ensure security at the park and prevent unauthorised entry.
The police also imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in Connaught Place and adjoining areas, citing concerns over law and order and the safety of people and property.
The CJP’s proposed march came amid demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a halt to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The party’s call for a fresh demonstration followed the remand of CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to five days of judicial custody over allegations of trespassing and violations of bonds requiring them to maintain peace.
Dipke maintained that the planned gathering was intended to hoist the national flag, asserting that waving the Tricolour was not a crime.
